Waymo 360

VR experience

Self-driving cars have always been shrouded in an air of mystery, right back to the days of Knight Rider. But as they become a reality, people are having trouble trusting them.

So, to help people experience and understand self-driving technology, we created Waymo 360 – a VR experience that puts you inside one of Waymo’s cars and explains exactly how it works.

To create it, we filmed a real journey around Phoenix, Arizona with one of Waymo’s fully self-driving cars.

Because we used the 360° format, anyone can see the world as the car sees it, and how it processes information from all the way around it.

Viewers can not only see how the car sees the world using LiDAR, Radar and cameras, they can also see how it predicts what each object will do, and how it plans a route forward.

And then they can experience what it’s like to be a passenger.

Over 500,000 people took the journey in its first week after launch, and the experience helped to change the narrative around self-driving technology.
